Goodies

My stuff arrived today from Knit Picks! YAY!

I started the Dale of Norway sweater and I am not liking how the back looks when I'm carrying the yarn. I don't know what to do to fix this since I don't know that much about colorwork. I think I will have to set it aside until I can meet with my yarn consultant. Until then I will start on the Last-Minute Stripes Sweater by Amy King in the Simple Stripes Crayon. I got the pattern off the Knit Picks site and now it seems to have gone away. Good thing I printed it out when I did or I would be SOL.

How are you carrying your yarn in the back? When I'm carrying across a long row of stitches, I do the knit 3 twist method. Basicall, I knit 3, twist the ayarns together one full twist, then knit 3, then twist the threads together again but in the opposite direction (this will even the tension out and help you not get a huge mess tangling the two yarns together. I can show you sometime if you'd like (but it might be a little hard to get arranged, as we live on the opposite ends of the earth from each other.) Do you know of a halfway point we could meet? Let me know if you have a free block of time and I'll see if I can come help.

See that is the problem. i kind of wing it and the method that I have been using where i twist the two yarns together at 3 stitches ends up in a tangled mess by the time the row is done. obviously I am not doing something right.

I'm thinking that knitknot can probably give me some pointers at the next Monday knitting gathering, but thanks for the offer. In the meantime I started the self striping sweater.

Hey! I have that exact same skein of sock yarn from KP! (the one on top, center) It made one really cute sock, the other one is in the WIP box.

The trick to not getting all tangled is to make sure that every other twist goes the opposite direction. Your yarn shouldn't cross over itself more than once or it will make a big tangle. Try thinking of your twists as clockwise and counter clockwise - if you alternate the twisting you should come out fine. It does take a little practice but once you get on to it, it really is quite easy. You also have to keep track of where you take your different colors from. I have been pretty successful at 2 color knitting, and this is what I've figured out, mostly by trial and error.

Say I'm knitting with red and yellow. I do the alternating twist to carry my accent color (yellow) through the main color (red). When I'm knittingI will always be careful to grab my red from the top (over the top of the yellow yarn) and my yellow from the bottom (under the red yarn.) This also helps prevent tangles.

Like I said, if you get some free time, I'd be willing to help. I also plan on attending SCA more regularilly once it's back at the school, so maybe we could meet up then. I've been itching to get my knit on...

We're starting to meet back at the school next Wednesday and I will try to remember to bring my knitting. I think I will benefit from a hands on demo. See you soon!
