CSA = Community Shares Agriculture

For those unfamiliar with the term, this allows people to purchase a percentage of a local farmers yield and then you pick up said percentage each week during the growing season.

This is our first year doing CSA (or as a friend calls it "the cargo cult") and I like it, but we have a hard time eating all the produce each week. Maybe if we were feeding a family of 4 or splitting it with another household I wouldn't feel so wasteful. I've managed to prepare most of the stuff we get, but some things ended up in the compost despite my best efforts. I like the concept but it makes me reluctant to do it again next year, especially since I seem to be the only one at our house who makes any attempt to eat the produce each week. Granted he will eat stuff if I make it, but he takes not take any intitative to prepare anything himself. Frustrating.

This Sunday is Yarn Harlot in Eau Claire, WI. I think it will be fun!

It sounds like an interesting program, if you eat enough produce to be worth it. I'm going to mention it to Ilya and see what he thinks.

Where did you find out about this? I'd be interested in finding out more too.

There was an article in our Co-op newsletter this past Spring. padruig and I had heard about CSA before, but this year we chose to act on it. My feelings are still mixed, but my veggie intake is way up!

There is a link for CSA farms in my post.

A friend of mine, one of the original sots, runs a CSA farm in south eastern Wisconsin. While Googling him, I came across this site (http://www.localharvest.org/)which answered some questions about a farm not that farm from us (which unfortuneatly doesn't do CSA anymore). Thought it would be a good thing to try.
